Foreign Trade

The Department of Foreign Trade functions at Indira Gandhi College of Arts & Science (IGCAS), since its inception in 2001. The B. Com. (Foreign Trade) Degree offered by the Department is unique on many counts and one of its kind at Under Graduate level, in the entire South India.

The course is a blend of various subjects from the fields of Commerce, Management and Economics with a special focus on International Trade. Apart from learning the conventional subjects offered in the Commerce curriculum, the students learn the intricacies of export trade. Papers like Fundamentals of International Trade, Foreign Trade procedure & Documentation, EXIM Financing, Foreign Trade Promotion, Forex Management, International Economics, Global Resources etc expose the students to the principles and practices of Foreign Trade. The Course enables the students to meet the demands of the Export – Import industry. The students also undergo an On Job Training (OJT) in an Industrial concern as a part of the curriculum, which blends theory with practice.

At present the candidates who wish to pursue higher studies in this field of specialization has the MBA (International Business) offered by Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi, and other leading institutions including Pondicherry University. Apart from this they may opt for other Post Graduate Programmes relevant to Commerce and Management streams. A large number of the alumni of the department has completed their post graduation and are well placed in Private sector, Government sector and PSU’s.

The Department has 4 full time faculty members and 1 agency faculty in its fold. Two Assistant professors belong to Foreign Trade discipline, two from Commerce and one from Economics. The faculty members are well qualified and experienced. One faculty member is already a doctorate and all others are pursuing their doctoral programmes in different universities.

The Department has produced excellent results in the University examinations consistently. Beyond this students are also exposed to viva exams, seminars and presentations in order to improve their soft skills.

The Department of Foreign Trade has plans for expansion in the future. It has already submitted proposal for starting M. Com programme to the higher ups.
